Grades 3-5 Spring Testing on SBAC coming up in May - Take a practice test to experience it yourself!

State Testing for 3rd-5th Grade
Curious about SBAC, the state test our grade 3-5 students take every spring? Give it a try using the practice test found here!  More information from the PTA about SBAC here.  Additional information for parents here.

Important State Testing Grades 3-5 in May.

CAASPP state testing begins in May. 3rd grade -May 1st-5th; 4th grade - May 8-12; 5th grade - May 15-19.  Find more information, including Parent Notification letters in English, Spanish and Chinese here.

The California Education Code Section 60615 states that parents/guardians may annually submit a written request to the principal of their student’s school if they do not wish to have their student take any or all tests. If a parent or guardian submits an exemption request after testing has begun, any test(s) completed before the request is submitted will be scored and the results reported to the parent or guardian and included in the pupil’s records.  AUSD teachers and schools support students to do well on the tests and help them learn test-taking skills that will enable them to be successful throughout their school career and beyond.  We encourage parents to contact their child’s teacher or principal with any concerns they may have about the test before they request that their student be excluded from taking the test(s).

Parent Information and Help - What is Eureka Math and how can I help my child?

Haight Families!  Do you have questions about our new math program, Eureka?  Want to know more about how to support your child with math the "Eureka Way"??

Alameda Unified is using a new math curriculum called "Eureka Math".  It teaches students K-5 how to understand math at a deeper level and teaches them alternate ways to solve problems. It  looks very different than the way most of us learned math.

There are resources to help families understand Eureka math and learn how to help their child.

Please click on this link to find examples of Eureka homework for grades K-5 for parents.

Please click on this link to see videos of each Eureka lesson for grades K-5.

Toolbox Learning at School and at Home

Haight teachers and staff have been trained in a social emotional curriculum called Toolbox.  All of our students are learning about the 12 tools that can be used throughout the day and out in the world.  Ask your child about the tools - they can teach you the breathing tool!

More information can be found here: Toolbox Parent Handout

In addition Heart-Mind Mindfulness teachers visited all Haight classrooms for a 16-session mindfulness program that taught them how to pay attention, improve concentration, resolve conflicts, and develop empathy.  A perfect companion to our Toolbox Curriculum.

Superintendent's Message on Hate Speech Incidents

Superintendent McPhetridge sent the following robocall to all AUSD families on Sunday, November 13:

Over the last few days, we heard reports of some racist graffiti and behavior at schools, including in Alameda. I want all of our AUSD families to know that it is unacceptable to us as a district and against what we stand for as Americans to see these hateful and exclusive behaviors.
Please let your children know we have taken a strong stand in this district and in this community that everyone belongs here. We do not tolerate hate speech, bullying, racism, sexism, homophobia, or any other forms of hatred. We are a district that is committed to safe and inclusive schools for each and every student, family, and staff member.
Please know tomorrow morning community members may be standing outside our schools and quietly welcoming students as they come in.  This is a community-wide and peaceful effort to emphasize the message that Everyone Belongs Here. And please join us as we ALL say, tomorrow and every day: "Everyone belongs here."
Please let a school staff member know immediately if you hear of incidents of hate speech or bullying at schools so we can investigate it. And thank you partnering with us to promote safe and inclusive schools for every child and every family in Alameda.
