Background Information for School Renaming Process

Update on some information that has been in the news and on social media about a potential process to consider renaming Haight Elementary.

At the most recent school board meeting, Superintendent McPhetridge shared information provided from a fellow Alameda resident about the words and views of Governor Henry Haight for which Haight Elementary is named.  Based on Governor Haight’s published words and views,  the Superintendent has requested that we consider renaming Haight Elementary. The superintendent’s remarks to the school board can be seen in this  remarks to the school board can be seen in this video:http://alamedausdca.swagit.com/mini/12142017-1302/#16

See an article in East Bay Times, http://www.eastbaytimes.com/2017/12/14/superintendent-supports-renaming-elementary-school-in-alameda/

The process to rename schools follows a formal process which is outlined by board policy. See the details here:http://www.gamutonline.net/district/alameda/DisplayPolicy/587049/

The first step for consideration of renaming a school is for the school community to create a petition for the renaming with at least 100 signatures from the school community (meaning parent/guardians, students, and employees from Haight). If I receive such a petition, I will convene a School Renaming Committee that surveys the community about whether the name should be changed. If the majority of respondents say yes, the committee submits a proposed name to the superintendent. If the superintendent approves the name, he then forwards it to the Board, the Board accepts community response, and then the Board considers the new name at a public meeting.

The PTA meeting on January 10th included a discussion of the renaming issue and process. Following the meeting, parents discussed developing a petition.  Stay tuned for more information and updates.
