    State Testing Update

    3rd Grade Testing: April 29-May 3

    4th Grade Testing: May 6-10

    5th Grade Testing: May 13-17

The California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress, or CAASPP, is the new state academic testing program.  CAASPP includes computer adaptive tests in English Language Arts and Mathematics for 3rd, 4th and 5th graders, as well as Science for 5th graders only.  The CAASPP assessment includes an online Performance Task in ELA and Math as well.  More information can be found on AUSD's website here.

To learn more about the types of questions on the computer-based test, you and your child can view the practice test online at the California Department of Education (CDE) Smarter Balance Practice Web page here.  You can learn more about the Smarter Balanced Assessment System provided by SBAC here as well.

If you would like more information, please visit the Parent/Student tab of the CDE CAASPP Web page at here.

The California Education Code Section 60615 states that parents/guardians may annually submit a written request to the principal of their student's school if they do not wish to have their student take any or all tests. If a parent or guardian submits an exemption request after testing has begun, any test(s) completed before the request is submitted will be scored and the results reported to the parent or guardian and included in the pupil’s records.  AUSD teachers and schools support students to do well on the tests and help them learn test-taking skills that will enable them to be successful throughout their school career and beyond.  We encourage parents to contact their child's teacher or principal with any concerns they may have about the test before they request that their student be excluded from taking the test(s).

    Superintendent Search Info

The Board of Education of the Alameda School District is in the process of conducting a Superintendent Search for purposes of hiring the District’s next Superintendent. Eric Andrew and Juan Garza of Leadership Associates, an executive search firm, were selected to advise the Board in this important process. You can find more detail and regular updates about the search process on our Superintendent Search webpage.

Leadership Associates has developed an online survey  to collect input from all stakeholders about the desired characteristics of the next superintendent. Please take the survey here to provide your feedback! Please also note that on Wednesday, March 27, community members are invited to an open forum about the superintendent search at 6:30 pm. The forum will be held at both Otis Elementary School (in English) and Island High School (in multiple languages).

    We Need Volunteers!

We need YOU!  If you want to volunteer, we could use your help, whether you can help 1 day a week, 5 days or any number in between.  We're always looking for volunteers to help in classrooms, as Art Docents, making copies and helping at lunch.  Please see Kevin Baker or email him at kbaker@alamedaunified.org if you need more information or have questions!

    the 12 tools
Haight teachers and staff have been trained in a social emotional curriculum called Toolbox.  All of our students are learning about the 12 tools that can be used throughout the day and out in the world.  Ask your child about the tools - they can teach you the breathing tool!

More information can be found here: Toolbox Parent Handout

In addition Heart-Mind Mindfulness teachers visited all Haight classrooms for a 16-session mindfulness program that taught them how to pay attention, improve concentration, resolve conflicts, and develop empathy.  A perfect companion to our Toolbox Curriculum.
